To play Euchre, follow these steps:

1. Setup and Dealing

* Players cut for positions at the table, for partners, and for the deal.[1]

* Any player may shuffle the cards, with the dealer being the last to do so.[2][3]

* The dealer presents the pack to the "pone" to be cut, ensuring at least four cards are left in each packet.[2][3]

* The dealer distributes cards to each player in rotation, beginning on his left, either two cards at a time and then three, or three and then two, until everyone has five cards.[2][3]

* The dealer must continue with the same number (two or three) for the first round for all players, including himself.[2]

* After dealing, the next card is turned face up on the remainder of the pack (except in five and seven-handed games, where no trump is turned).[2]

* The deal passes to the left, and each player deals in turn to the left until the game or rubber concludes.[2]

2. The Turn

* Once the trump is settled, the "eldest hand" (or the player to the left of the eldest hand if their partner is playing alone) leads any card they please.[4][5]

* Other players must follow suit if they are able.[4][5]

* If a player cannot follow suit, they may either trump the trick or discard a card of another suit.[5]

* The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, with trumps winning against all other suits and higher trumps winning against lower trumps.[5]

* The winner of a trick may lead any card they please for the next trick.[5]

* This process continues until all five tricks have been played.[5]

3. Rules and Penalties

* Failure to follow suit when able is a "revoke".[4][5]

* If a revoke is discovered and claimed by adversaries, the hand is usually abandoned, and the adversaries may deduct two points from the revoking player's score or add two to their own.[5]

* If both sides revoke, the deal is void and the same dealer must deal again.[5]

* If a player discovers a mistake in playing a card in error before the trick is turned and quitted, the card must be left on the table and is liable to be called.[4]

* Cards played out of turn, in error, or dropped face upward are "exposed cards" and must be left face up on the table.[5]
