Setup

1. The players choose a case they all agree on.[1]

2. The map of London is placed in the middle of the table.[1]

3. The London directory and the list of informants are placed near the map.[1]

4. Players place nearby the newspaper whose date matches the case's (as of case 6, players also place all 1889's newspapers predating the case).[1]

5. Players may choose to grab blank sheets of paper and pencils to keep notes.[1]

6. A player is chosen as the 'lead investigator'.[1]

7. The lead investigator takes the booklet and reads the case's introduction text.[1]

A Turn

1. The lead investigator chooses a lead from the current case (for example, declaring they want to visit a crime scene and finding the address in the directory).[1]

2. If the chosen lead does not exist in the booklet, the player chooses another lead.[1]

3. Once a lead is found, the player reads the paragraph out to the group and notes that the lead has been followed.[1]

4. The player's turn is then over.[1]

5. The booklet is passed to the player on the left, who becomes the new lead investigator and chooses their own lead.[1]

6. During their turn, all players have free and unlimited access to the directory, the case's newspapers, and previously visited leads.[1][2]

7. Players can discuss the case or debate the next lead as much as they want, but if there is a disagreement about the next destination, the current lead investigator has the final word.[2]

Ending the Game

1. Players can decide to stop following leads as soon as they want.[3]

2. Players move to the 'Questions' section of the case and answer two series of questions.[3][4]

3. Players head to the 'Solution' section, where one player reads Holmes' conclusions out loud.[3]

4. Players open the envelope to evaluate their score and compare it to Holmes'.[3]

Scoring

1. To tally scores, players add the points obtained from answering the questions and then total the number of leads they followed.[3]

2. Leads considered "free" (found at the end of the 'Solution' section) do not count toward the total number of followed leads.[3]

3. If players followed more leads than Holmes, they subtract 5 points from their score for each extra lead.[3]

4. If players followed fewer leads than Holmes, they add 5 points to their score for each fewer lead.[3]

5. The final score is compared to Holmes' score, which is always 100 points.[3]
