How do I play?

To play Paper Tales, follow these procedures:
Setup
1. Place the Score track at the center of the table.[1][2]
2. Setup the Time token on the first spot of the Turn track.[1][2]
3. Form 2 pools with the Gold and Age tokens.[1][2]
4. Each player takes 3 Gold from the Gold pool.[1][2]
5. Each player chooses a color and takes the corresponding Player’s Aid card and Score token.[1][2]
6. Place Score tokens on the Score Track on square 0.[1][2]
7. Each player takes a set of 5 different Building cards (Town, Tavern, Mine, Temple and Barracks).[1][2]
8. Shuffle all Unit cards and place them face down in a pile.[1][2]
9. Leave a space available for forming a discard pile.[1][2]
Game Structure
1. A game is composed of 4 turns, each consisting of 6 successive phases.[3]
2. Players play simultaneously during each phase.[3]
3. A game turn ends after the Aging phase.[3]
4. The player with the most Legend Points after 4 game turns is the winner.[3]
Turn Phases
1. Recruitment
1. Players select the Units they will be able to deploy afterwards.[3]
2. Each player is dealt 5 Unit cards from the draw pile.[3]
3. Players keep one card of their choice and pass the 4 remaining cards to their left neighbor.[3]
4. From the 4 new cards, players keep one again and pass the remaining cards to their left neighbor.[3]
5. This process continues until each player has a hand of 5 cards, receiving cards from their right neighbor.[3]
6. The direction of passing cards changes depending on the turn: to the left on turns 1 and 3, and to the right on turns 2 and 4.[3]
7. At the end of the phase, each player adds any card kept from a previous turn to their hand.[3]
2. Deployment
1. Players put Units from their hand into play in their Kingdom.[3]
2. Players simultaneously place the Units they want to put into play, face down on available spots in their Kingdom.[4]
3. Each player has 4 available spots for deploying Units: 2 in the Front and 2 in the Back.[4][1]
4. If players lack space, they can freely discard Units already in play or move them from one spot to another.[4]
5. Among the Units they do not want to play, players are allowed to keep a single Unit and must discard the others.[4]
6. When all players are done, they simultaneously reveal the Units they just played and pay their cost in Gold.[4]
7. If a player lacks enough Gold, they must discard any Unit(s) they are unable to pay for.[4]
8. A Unit brought into play during a previous turn never has to be repaid.[4]
3. Construction and Upgrading
1. Each player can perform one single Construction action per turn.[5]
2. To construct a new Building, a player can place one of their 5 initial Buildings on its level 1 side or directly on its level 2 side.[5]
3. Construction requires paying a Land cost (2 Gold for each Building already possessed in the Kingdom) and a Resources cost (producing the required resources via Units and Buildings in play).[5]
4. To upgrade an existing Building from level 1 to level 2, the player pays the Resources cost and flips the Building to its level 2 side.[5]
4. Wars
1. Players determine the strength of their Kingdom by summing the strengths of the Units in the Front.[6]
2. Players compare their Kingdom's strength with their two neighbors (left and right).[6]
3. If a player has a higher or equal strength than a neighbor, they win a War.[6]
4. Each War won earns 3 Legend Points (LP).[6]
5. In the event of a tie, both players win the War and earn 3 Legend Points.[6]
6. In a 2-player variant, if a player's strength is greater than or equal to twice their opponent's strength, they win 2 Wars.[7]

what this block IS: the PASSAGE SEARCH's own results — the same search that fills this page's closest-passages list — and NOT the passages the answerer read. Answering runs its OWN retrieval: a far wider candidate pool, re-ranked down to a final handful, plus floors this search never applies — the base rulebook, surviving errata corrections, and one slot per book on a multi-book read. Each of those armed only if THIS ask sent what it needs: the boost block names the ids it forwarded, and the scope line names the books it read. A document the answer CITES that no row here names is therefore EXPECTED, not a defect: two searches, two candidate pools, two orders. The answerer's own final rows are shown in their own block below, beside these and never mixed into them.

score = the fused retrieval score (reciprocal-rank fusion over the search arms) — NOT a cosine similarity. This ruling ran the THREE-ARM fuse (full-text + vector + the doc-priority boost arm, which carried the base rulebook and/or the errata corrections this query matched), whose arithmetic ceiling is 0.04918 — all three arms ranking the same chunk #1 (ceiling = arms/(k+1) at k=60). The measured healthy band 0.016–0.033 was measured on TWO-arm asks and does not bound this one: its high end is the two-arm ceiling, and a third arm has room above it. A chunk only one arm ranked highly lands near 0.016 (that one arm's #1 vote), so 0.03 here is an excellent hit, not a 3% match.

per-arm ranks (the rank each search arm gave a chunk): NOT DISCLOSED by the gateway. Fusion happens gateway-side and only the FUSED score crosses the wire, so rulesage cannot show them without a gateway change. The rank column below is the FUSED rank (position in the returned list), which is real.

token count per chunk: NOT DISCLOSED — chunk token counts are not reported on the ask path. The character counts below are of the bounded snippet/quote rulesage actually received — a real measurement of what we hold, never an estimate of the chunk.

what this block IS: the passages the ANSWERING read put in front of the answerer, in the order it read them — the other half of the two reads described above, and the one that decides what the answer could possibly say. Each row names the book it came from and where in that book it sits, what it scored when the search arms were fused, which arm carried it there, and whether the re-ranker chose it or a floor guaranteed it a slot. A row here that no passage-search row names is EXPECTED: a far wider pool, re-ranked, with floors the passage search never applies.

candidate pool: the answering read scored 11 passages, out of a ceiling of 80 set gateway-side. Both figures are reported by the gateway for THIS ask — measurements of what actually happened, not constants read out of anyone's source and printed here on faith.

floors armed for this ask: the base rulebook — armed · surviving errata corrections — not armed · one slot per book on a multi-book read — not armed. Every floor is stated on every ask, armed or not, so a floor that did not apply here is never mistaken for one this app does not know about.

arms fused for this ask: vector + full-text + the doc-priority boost arm. Stated separately from the rows because an arm that ran and carried nothing is a different fact from an arm that never ran.

first-token watchdog: 30s per arming window (rulesage.table.first-token-watchdog-seconds), re-armed once by the passages frame — so the worst case before a reader falls back to polling is 60s. Whether it actually fired is a BROWSER-side decision that never reaches the server, so it is not recorded here. The stream path above is the server's half of that story: whether a delta was emitted at all.

both are the CHILD's settings, not rulesage's, and no ask reply carries them — an answer never states which context window or think posture produced it. this game registers NO errata cards (edition 1017), so "no registered errata card matched" above could never have matched one

Errata scope: the gate above matched this ruling's own edition only. When an ask also reads an expansion, that expansion's own registered errata cards stay outside the match — a stated phase-1 limitation, not a failed lookup.
